Michael Lerner talked about his book Dry Manhattan: Prohibition in New York City, published by Harvard University Press. The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution ushered in the era of Prohibition in 1919. The ban on alcohol was deemed by President Herbert Hoover as a “noble experiment” and was intended to lead to a more moral and healthy society. Mr. Lerner contended that this was not the case. He focused on the history of resistance to Prohibition in New York City to expose the inherent failures of the law. After his presentation Mr. Lerner responded to audience members' questions.
