Robert Roper talked about Now the Drum of War (Walker & Company; October 28, 2008). In the book he examines the experiences of Walt Whitman and his brothers during the Civil War through their correspondences with one and other and their mother, Louisa. Walt Whitman worked as a nurse during the war and his younger brother, George Washington Whitman fought in twenty-one battles, including Antietam and Vicksburg. Following his remarks, he responded to telephone calls and electronic mail.

Robert Roper is the author of several books, including Fatal Mountaineer and the novels Mexico Days and Cuervo Tales. Mr. Roper’s writing has appeared in several publications, including National Geographic, Outside, and the New York Times. He currently teaches at Johns Hopkins University. close
