Professor Elizabeth Gray talked about the use of and public opinion on opium and laudanum in the 19th century. Professor Gray described how most laudanum addicts at the time were upper class women who had originally been prescribed the drug by their doctors. She argued that since men at the time were less likely to seek medical attention, and it was more socially acceptable for them to drink, a gender divide was created between alcoholics and opium addicts. close
