Dr. Francis Collins talked about the administration of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which comprises 27 institutes and centers. He discussed the importance of the Genome Project to medical research and how it has helped doctors personalize medical treatment. He detailed the role he and the NIH played in treating author and journalist Christopher Hitchens' terminal cancer. He explained how he first met Mr. Hitchens and their opposite views on the existence of God, revealing his own personal transformation from atheism to Christianity.
