Paul and Stephen Kendrick talked about their book, Douglass and Lincoln: How a Revolutionary Black Leader and a Reluctant Liberator Struggled to End Slavery and Save the Union.

The authors recounted the relationship between Fredrick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. The authors presented President Lincoln as a reluctant abolitionist whose three meetings with Douglass from 1863 to 1865 and further reading of Douglass' writings encouraged Lincoln to believe that the Civil War could not be won without emancipation. After their presentation, the authors answered questions from members of the audience.

Paul Kendrick is the co-author with his father, Stephen Kendrick, of Sarah’s Long Walk: The Free Blacks of Boston and How Their Struggle for Equality Changed America.

The event was held at the Multicultural Student Services Center at GWU. close
