The American Society of Newspaper Editors held a forum during their annual meeting to discuss the power of cartoons in American society. Garry Trudeau, the creator of the newspaper comic strip Doonesbury, and Matt Groening, cartoonist, and creator of the popular animated television show The Simpsons, explained their work as artists and as reflectors of American culture. Ms. Overholser and John Driscoll discussed the continuing interest Americans have in cartoons, the influences affecting the content of cartoons, and the effect cartoons have on American society. Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Groening took questions from the audience, mostly made up of newspaper editors, following the discussion. close
