Justice Clarence Thomas introduced Professor Harold Hyman, who discussed the dynamics between the Supreme Court and the Civil War. He examined four main definitions of a civil war, the peripheral nature of the Supreme Court’s wartime docket in examining this dynamic, and the great potential for institutional change of the Supreme Court during this time. This was the fifth in a lecture series titled, “The Supreme Court in the Civil War.” close
