Edward Djerejian talked about his experience with President Bashar al-Assad’s regime while serving as U.S. ambassador to Syria during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. He argued that a political strategy is the only way to create a lasting solution in Syria and to safely remove Mr. Assad from power. He said that if the Obama administration decided to pursue a military strategy in Syria, it should do so with a substantial amount of international support. Other topics included Bashar al-Assad’s background and rise to power, and the influence of Russia in Syrian politics.

C-SPAN Radio’s Nancy Calo also previewed the Sunday political talk show guests. close
