Ms. Goodling testified about her knowledge of plans to dismiss several U.S. attorneys at the Justice Department, the role the White House might have played in the decision, and her duties at the department. After invoking her Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination, she testified under a grant of immunity that she has sometimes “crossed the line” in asking about political affiliations when interviewing and hiring assistant U.S. attorneys and that she was not directly involved in the final decisions on dismissals. She also talked about conversations and meetings with both Assistant Attorney General McNulty and Attorney General Gonzales on the matter and their previous testimony before congressional committees. Her testimony was sometimes interrupted by points of order and parliamentary inquiry made by Republican members who generally objected to the conduct of the hearing. close
