Officials talked about the ongoing investigation into the case of a cow that had tested positive for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, more commonly known as mad cow disease. Among the specific issues addressed were efforts to trace 81 cows that were imported from Canada at the same time as the infected cow, new rules against the use of “downer” cattle for human consumption, and new testing procedures. The officials also hailed the cooperation from industry and Canadian officials, and responded to questions via telephone and from reporters. close
