One of the members of the Corps of Discovery was William Clark’s African-American slave, York. The panelists discussed topics including the influence of African-Americans on the expedition, York’s experiences on the expedition and his life afterward, slavery, and Thomas Jefferson. After their presentations the panelists answered questions from members of the audience. Ms. Kubik moderated the panel.

Mr. Holmberg edited the book Dear Brother: Letters of William Clark to Jonathan Clark, published by Yale University Press. Ms. Swann-Wright is the author of A Way Out of No Way: Claiming Family and Freedom in the New South, published by University of Virginia Press. Ms. Stanton is the author of Free Some Day: The African-American Families of Monticello and Slavery at Monticello, both published by University of North Carolina Press. Mr. Craig is producing a film and a children’s book to be titled Who Was York?: A New Look at the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
