At the opening plenary session of the 2004 National Governors' Association Winter Meeting, NGA Chairman Governor Kempthorne released the first report from his “A Lifetime of Health and Dignity: Confronting Long-Term Care Challenges in America” initiative. The report, titled “Health Aging and States: Making Wellness the Rule, Not the Exception” which explores strategies for states to help prevent and manage chronic diseases was distributed to the governors on CD-ROM. Ms. Judd moderated a panel which outlined the issues of how chronic disease affects long-term health outcomes and costs; demand for and financing of home and community-based services; and technological development designed to assist patients and caregivers. The panelists then participated in a discussion with governors which included the topics of childhood obesity and incentives for good health. close
