Professor Jay Martin discussed his book "The Education of John Dewey: A Biography", published by Columbia University Press. Based on original sources, including the collection of unpublished papers from the Center for Dewey Studies at Southern Illinois University, the book is a biography of the American philosopher and noted education reformer. In the book, Professor Martin examines Dewey’s family history, religious influences, political activism and the importance of the women in Dewey’s life, especially his mother, wife and daughters, and others, including social reformer Jane Addams. During his presentation, Professor Martin focused on Dewey’s philosophical education and influences, and his contributions to the development of the American school of philosophy identified as Pragmatism. Following his remarks, Professor Martin answered questions from members of the audience. close
