At the Community Arts Auditorium of Wayne State University, incumbent Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick debated former Deputy Mayor Freman Hendrix. The candidates criticized each other on several issues, including their handling of the economic future of the city. Among the topics they discussed were how to fix the appearance of Detroit, plan for such epidemics as influenza, and improving relations with the suburbs. The candidates also responded to questions and comments from the panelists, Professor Wu and Ms. Harlan. A question was also asked from a registered Detroit voter, Terry Blair, via video feed from WDIV-TV’s “Voter Video Patrol Watch.” She asked about gangs, drugs, and poverty.

Recent polls showed Deputy Mayor Hendrix ahead of the incumbent by almost 10 percent for the election on November 8, 2005. WDIV-TV Detroit Local 4, the Office of Government and Community Affairs at Wayne State University, and Clear Channel Radio on WMXD-FM 92.3 hosted the debate, which was held. Devin Scilli close
