Witnesses testified on the Defense Department’s (DOD) management of missing military personnel accounting. According to the DOD, there were an estimated 83,000 “prisoners of war” or “missing in action” (POW/MIA) service members from past conflicts in Vietnam, Korea, the Cold War, Persian Gulf, and World War II. The Government Accountability Office released a report that showed DPD had given multiple department agencies overlapping authority and control of POW/MIA searches and that recovery operations lacked a cohesive mission. close
