Witnesses testified regarding violent crimes committed by older Americans suffering from dementia. Among the specific issues addressed were the number of people affected, the legal and judicial implications of these crimes, the symptoms of dementia, and treatment methods. This hearing was prompted by an incident that occurred in Pine Run, Florida, on February 7. Deputy Sheriff Brian Litz was shot to death while conducting a well-being check on 74-year-old Ivan Gotham. Gotham was killed when other deputies on the scene returned fire.
