As part of an Earth Day event, the State Department’s open forum, Secretary of State Colin Powell talked about Bush administration policy on deforestation and the need to protect the environment. One of the panelists Ms. Goodall talked about specific needs in Tanzania and other developing countries to provide help for the people so that they need not cut down all their trees. Other panelists provided an overview of the world’s forests and talked about threats and the environmental, economic and social costs of deforestation. They also talked about solutions now being tried. close
