Charles Eagles talked about his book The Price of Defiance: James Meredith and the Integration of Ole Miss (The University of North Carolina Press; July 15, 2009). In 1962 James Meredith became the first black student to enroll in the University of Mississippi. Mr. Meredith’s enrollment at the university was followed by a riot that resulted in the deaths of two civilians, several wounded U.S. marshals, and the assignment of thousands of soldiers to Oxford, Mississippi, by President Kennedy. In his book Professor Eagles attempts to show the confluence of events since World War II that culminated in the riot. He talked about his extensive research into untapped resources to build a complex picture. Professor Eagles also responded to questions from members of the audience.

This event was held in the LemuriaBooks website building in Jackson, Mississippi, at 5:30 p.m. CT on September 15, 2009. close
