Secretary O’Keefe briefed reporters on the Department of Defense Inspector General’s report on the investigation into the Tailhook scandal. In 1991, several women reported being harassed by naval pilots attending a convention in California. The Inspector General’s report concentrated on the Defense Department’s response to the allegations of harassment, and announced the undertaking of several steps to eliminate the obstacles to a sufficient investigation into the Tailhook scandal and to ensure prompt investigation into harassment in the future. The report stated that senior Navy officials deliberately obstructed the investigation to avoid bad publicity for the department. close
