The increase, to occur over a three-year timeframe, would raise the size of the Army to 569,000 active-duty soldiers. Secretary Gates also said he would travel to Israel next week and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, the Israeli defense minister.
