Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced an Army personnel increase of 22,000 to meet global deployment needs. The increase, to occur over a three-year timeframe, would raise the size of the Army to 569,000 active-duty soldiers. Secretary Gates also said he would travel to Israel next week and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, the Israeli defense minister. Mr. Gates said the topics would include Iran.

Secretary Gates also responded to a question about Private First Class Bowe R. Bergdahl, captured in Afghanistan, who had been released by the Taliban. He said he was disgusted by the exploitation of a prisoner. close
