The House of Representatives considered a bill to eliminate the Presidential Election Campaign Fund, which is used to provide funding to presidential candidates in primary and general elections. Candidates who choose to accept this public funding cannot spend above a certain limit in each state. Since the Fund's inception in 1973, every presidential candidate, except for President Obama in 2008, has accepted money from the Fund for the general election.

Taxpayers have the option of diverting $3 from their federal income tax payment to the Fund. Representative Gregg Harper of Mississippi proposed this bill in order to use that diverted tax revenue to reduce the deficit. The bill passed the House by a vote of 235-190.
