Members of the European Parliament debated the role European Union countries may have played in facilitating the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) use of enhanced interrogation techniques following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. Several members welcomed the release of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report on those techniques, but condemned the various forms of enhanced interrogation techniques. Some members argued that torture is a criminal act and that the EU should take further action and press charges against those involved. Others commented on the divisions within the U.S. over the release of the report and on Europe’s future relations with the U.S. close
