Andy Greenberg talked by video link from New York City about the creation of the world’s first plastic handgun crafted by 3-D printers. The 16-piece plastic firearm, called “The Liberator,” was created by the Texas-based company Defense Distributed, which had posted prototype blueprints of the gun parts online. On May 8, 2013, the State Department demanded the company take down the blueprints, saying it wants to review the files for compliance with arms export control laws governing shipping weapons overseas. The blueprint had thus far been downloaded more than 100,000 times, and was still posted on servers in other countries. YouTube videos of the gun were shown in the background. Mr. Greenberg responded to telephone calls and electronic mail. close
