Mr. Sartwell talked about his recent column on American character & subjects in the news. His recent column carried by the Philadelphia Inquirer says the America qualities of individualism & freedom of thought, the qualities that gave rise to the First Amendment - the qualities celebrated in Emerson’s famous essay, “On Self-Reliance” -- have been replaced by worship of bureaucracy, big government, standardized tests and standardized minds. The qualities of the earlier America “are dead,” Mr. Sartwell said. He responded to audience telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail. close
