The Congressional Human Rights Caucus, a bipartisan organization concerned with human rights violations around the world, heard testimony on the recent occupation of Vilnius, Lithuania by Soviet troops, which replaced the elected legislature of Lithuania with a pro-Soviet Union and anti-independence faction. Thirteen Lithuanians were killed in the fighting during the occupation. Representative Tom Lantos, D-CA noted the similarities between the crackdown by the Soviet Union during the Persian Gulf crisis and the crackdown by Soviet troops in Hungary in 1956 during the Suez crisis. close
