Committee members heard testimony concerning the president’s proposal to double the size of the Peace Corps to 10,000 members by the year 2000. Members of Congress and Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala testified about their personal participation in Peace Corps programs and its effectiveness as an instrument of U.S. foreign policy.
