Governor Connally served as a three-term governor of the state of Texas. Born February 27, 1917, in Floresville, Texas, he received his education at the University of Texas and graduated in 1941. He discussed his years as a staffer and confidant to President Johnson and the controversial decision to name him as John F. Kennedy’s running mate. He recounted the assassination of President Kennedy in which he was wounded and his relationship with President Nixon. He also explained his reasons for seeking the Republican nomination for the presidency. Much of the conversation concerned Governor Connally’s bankruptcy which occurred in the late 1980s. Currently he is doing consulting work and serves as special counsel to several executive boards in Texas. Governor Connally explained the project of the film about the Dallas tragedy of President Kennedy and described his memories of the assassination. He also mentioned his alliance to President Lyndon Johnson, a fellow Texan, and responded to comments about Connally being a “Johnson protegee.” He mentioned the factors influencing Texas politics and the transition he saw between the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Governor Connally concluded by explaining his change in allegiance from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 1973.
