Panelists talked about the the First United States Congress, which met from March 4, 1789 to March 4, 1791 to implement the Constitution and create a new government. Charlene Bickford, director of the First Federal Congress Project, and Christine Blackerby, educational specialist at the Center for Legislative Archives, spoke about finding and preserving the documents of the First Congress. Historian Fergus Bordewich shared observations as a user of these records in his research on the First Congress.The event “Congress at 225 Years: Where it All Began” took place at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center and was part of the Association of Centers for the Study of Congress' (ACSC) “Congress Week,” from April 1-7, 2014. close
