The House Domestic Policy Subcommittee examined how the private health insurance system impacts the medical care of patients. Witnesses included family members of patients who discussed their experiences with private health insurance companies, and former health insurance executives. Among the topics addressed were how the insurance system works, current health care bills, insurance companies' views of the public option during 1993 Clinton health care bill debate, and the 2008 Presidential campaign.

This hearing was the first of a two-part hearing. Part two was held on September 17, 2009. close
