George Washington University and Responsive Community sponsored a teach-in to discuss their ideals of civic responsibility, or communitarianism. Their platform focuses on a concept of reciprocal obligation on community members, which maintains that citizens owe their community something in return for public aid and services. Supporters of the communitarian movement disdain both conventional conservative political thinking, which emphasizes market forces, and conventional liberal political thought, which emphasizes individual rights above the interests of the community.
