David Bacon talked about his book Communities without Borders: Images and Voices from the World of Migration, published by ILR Press. In his book, Mr. Bacon documents, through words and photos, the experience of migrant workers and the communities they have established in Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States. He showed photographs from his book. The author addressed the issues in the meatpacking industry, using the situation at Smithfield as the primary example that best reflects the main theme of his book: immigrant lives and the policies that shape them. Other speakers talked about immigration legislation and about personal experiences. Most of the attendees were immigrant rights advocates and people working in worker centers. Mr. Bacon and the other speakers responded to audience members' questions.
