Historian Currie Ballard talked about his discovery of rare film taken of Oklahoma’s black communities in the 1920s by Solomon Sir Jones. Oklahoma was unique in that former black Indian slaves were able to accumulate property during the land runs of the 1890s, leading to the founding of over 50 predominantly African-American communities in the state. Mr. Ballard also talked about the history of the depiction of blacks in film. Various clips from the 1920s films were shown as well as a clip of “I Spy.” Mr. Ballard was interviewed at the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center of Langston University. "

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2012 LCV Cities Tour” in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on April 9-12 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Cox Communications local cable affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. close
