Joseph McCartin, associate history professor at Georgetown University, recounted the call for an illegal strike by the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) in August 1981 and the subsequent firing of the strikers by President Ronald Reagan. The author recalled the lead-up to the strike for the workers, which included an over-twenty-year fissure with labor management, the union’s initial endorsement of President Reagan, and how the outcome of the strike affected public sector unions in the ensuing years. Joseph McCartin responded to questions from members of the audience at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta. The event was co-sponsored by the Georgia State University Library, which holds records from PATCO in its Southern Labor Archives. close
