Fourteen-year-old Basie Gitlin began collecting antiquarian books when he was nine years old, and he currently has a collection of more than 2,500 titles. First, he and his parents spoke about his hobby at his home in North Branford, Connecticut. He also discussed some of his favorite books with patrons of the Bristol Public Library in nearby Bristol, Connecticut. His collection includes children’s nonfiction and history books, and books on baseball. Basie owns a number of rare books, including an 1817 copy of the Columbian Orator. Basie usually finds his tomes at used bookstores, on eBay, at flea markets and at antique stores. close
