Federal, state, and local dignitaries gathered to pay tribute and celebrate the life of Coleman A. Young, the first African-American mayor of Detroit, who died Nov. 29 of respiratory failure. Mayor Young served a record five terms as mayor (1974-94) and was succeeded by Mayor Dennis Archer. close
