Author Barbara Freese talked about her book Coal: A Human History, published by Perseus Publishing. The book examines the role that coal has played in human history. Mrs. Freese traces the lineage of the “simple black rock” beginning three hundred million years ago. According to the book, coal was prized by Roman invaders who encountered it in Britain, made China a twelfth-century superpower, inspired the writing of the Communist Manifesto, and helped the northern states win the American Civil War. Coal has also caused death, disease, geopolitical discord and environmental damage. It has also been recently identified as a primary cause of global warming. Following her remarks, the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
