Chip Pitts talked about his concerns with the USA PATRIOT (Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) Act of 2001 and civil liberties, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. The legislation, signed into law in 2002 and renewed in 2005, was enacted in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It would expire in February 2011 and was slated to be re-authorized by Congress.
