This program featured readings by nominees for the National Book Critics Circle Awards. The National Book Critics Circle is a 25-year-old organization, comprised of some 600 book critics and book review editors. The nominees appearing at this event included: Joseph Ellis for “American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson;” James Tobin for “Ernie Pyle’s War: America’s Eyewitness to World War II;” Anne Fadiman for “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down;” Jon Krakauer for “Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster;” Pauline Maier for “American Scripture: Making the Declaration of Independence;” Don DeLillo for “Underworld;” Frank Bidart for “Desire;” Sonia Sanchez for “Does Your House Have Lions?;” Charles Wright for “Black Zodiac;” and Vivian Gornick for “The End of the Novel of Love.” The readings took place at the National Arts Club in New York City. close
