Jessica Wapner talked about her book, The Philadelphia Chromosome: A Mutant Gene and the Quest to Cure Cancer at the Genetic Level, in which she discusses the 1959 discovery of a mutant chromosome by a scientist in Philadelphia and the eventual realization, decades later, that the mutation is the sole cause of a certain kind of leukemia. This led to the first ever successful treatment of cancer at the genetic level and opened up a new field of cancer research. During this event, Ms. Wapner spoke with Dr. Brian Druker, one of the doctors featured in her book. They spoke at Powell’s City of Books in Portland, Oregon. close
