Zachary Mexico presented his semi-autobiography China Underground (Soft Skull Press; March 1, 2009). He began learning Chinese at 15 and first traveled to China at 16, eventually writing a book that presents a firsthand account of his travels. He is a member of the New York rock band Octagon and of the electronic duo Gates of Heaven. He uses the name Zachary Mexico as a musician and to disguise himself from the Chinese government. He studied Chinese youth subcultures and presented a picture of confusion of social and political attitudes among China’s most marginalized sub-cultures. Mr. Mexico read passages from his book and talked about how he interviewed his subjects. He answered questions from members of the audience. close
