Michelle Bachelet is inaugurated as President of Chile, the first woman to hold that position. The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, gives her inaugural address from a balcony of the Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago to people gathered on Constitution Plaza.

She was elected January 15, 2006, in a run-off election, marking the fourth consecutive presidential-election win for Concertacion, a center-left coalition of parties in Chile. She’s a 54-year-old physician and belongs to Chile’s Socialist Party.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended the inauguration. close
