Mariska Hargitay talked about the efforts of her Joyful Heart Foundation to help survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. She began her speech by citing statistics on rape and child abuse in the U.S. She also talked about the backlog of untested rape kits in police storage facilities around the country. She noted the progress both New York and Los Angeles police departments had made in testing rape kits and how their improvements had led to more rapists being caught, prosecuted and punished.
