President Fujimori of Peru announced the suspension of the Peru Constitution and the elimination of Peru’s legislature to restore order to the increasing domestic problems in his country. He also announced the beginning of state censorship of the mass media and the arrest of opposing political leaders to quell the violence caused by terrorism, poverty, lawlessness, and drug trafficking occurring in Peru. The foreign ministers from several countries in the Western Hemisphere met at the Organization of American States to respond to the Peru leader’s unconstitutional moves. The foreign ministers approved a resolution that would call for the immediate restoration of democracy in Peru and create a human rights commission that would visit Peru and monitor its political situation. close
