Panelists talked about preparing for catastrophes, including natural disasters such as earthquakes, accidents such as industrial chemical leaks, and terrorists attacks, including nuclear attacks. Speakers included Lucy Jones, a nationally-renowned seismologist known as the “Earthquake Lady” who advised the Los Angeles mayor on earthquake issues. She spoke specifically about Los Angeles, but in ways applicable to other cities. This was part of an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE) at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The center was the first university research center funded by the Homeland Security Department. close
