Attorney General John Ashcroft spoke with members of the press about the recent federal indictment of the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation and several of its leaders “for providing and conspiring to provide material support to Hamas.” He described the various charges against the group as well as the investigation into its activities. He attributed the indictment to the USA Patriot Act that he claimed allowed prosecutors access to intelligence and gave them the authority to gather information through wiretaps.

Executive Assistant Director for Counterterrorism for the FBI John Pistole spoke in more detail about the investigation and the cooperation between law enforcement agencies that he identified as a key factor leading to the indictment.

Following their remarks, the speakers responded to questions from reporters. close
