The committee heard testimony on the National Cancer Act which was signed into law in 1971. The National Cancer Act made the fight against cancer a national priority, and provided money for cancer research, community cancer programs, prevention and control programs, and the National Cancer Institute. Former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill spoke on his experiences both as a legislator during the passage of the National Cancer Act and as a patient suffering from rectal cancer. Ms. Price discussed her bout with leukemia during her youth, for which she underwent chemotherapy and induction therapy. She is one of the oldest survivors of acute myeloblastic leukemia. close
