Freelance journalist David Axe traveled to eastern Chad in late June and early July 2008, where he visited one of the 12 refugee camps there. The conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region began in 2003 and has left 300,000 people dead, according to United Nations estimates. Some 250,000 refugees from the fighting have made their way across Sudan’s western border into the neighboring country of Chad. He spoke to aid workers and refugees at Iridimi Refugee Camp about the day-to-day operations and the long-term sustainability of the facility. Topics included the conflicts between the refugees and the local residents such as disputes over natural resources, especially water. Mr. Axe talked about how the refugee camps are managed.
