President Bush spoke from the rear platform of the “Spirit of America” train in a stop during a whistle-stop train tour in Michigan. Speaking to a supportive audience, President Bush read from notes to criticize the policies of his opponent Democratic presidential nominee Gov. Clinton, including his environmental policies as embodied in the pollution content of the Arkansas River. Mrs. Bush stood by the president’s side during the appearance. The president was introduced by Michigan Governor John Engler, who spoke from the train platform accompanied by his wife standing by his side. Following his prepared remarks, the president was awarded a proclamation for “President Bush Day” from the mayor of Wixom. He also briefly greeted supporters following the ceremony.
