President Obama spoke at the Daimler Detroit Diesel Plant in Redford, Michigan, about the importance of a strong middle class, and called on Congress to sign legislation to avoid the “fiscal cliff.” In his speech he said he wanted a tax code that rewarded companies for creating jobs, pointing to Daimler’s $120 million investment that was to create 115 new jobs. He also criticized Michigan’s just-passed “right to work” legislation: “These so-called right to work laws, they don’t have anything to do with economics. They have everything to do with politics. What they’re really talking about is, giving you the right to work for less money.”
"Fiscal cliff" referred to impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress failed to reach a new budget agreement.
