Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osbourne gave his first major speech on the British economy on Wednesday, May 19, 2010. He is the Cabinet minister responsible for economic and financial matters. Chancellor Osborne was appointed by the new prime minister, Conservative David Cameron, and is faced with a budget deficit or the year that is forecast to be 12 percent of gross domestic product, the highest of the twenty-seven European countries, including Greece. He spoke to the Confederation of British Industry, the primary lobbying organization for United Kingdom business, about cutting public spending and reducing the corporate tax rate. close
